Nina Pina Poona.
The oldest of the four Gavin siblings, the most hilarious, and the one who gives the least amount of “fucks” with things that just don’t matter.
Growing up, Katryna (Nina) and I were very close. I’ve always thought she was the coolest thing since push-pops. The reason I am so unapologetically myself is because I have the support of her, no matter what. She has taught me that the only way to go through life is to be yourself, to stand up for what you believe in and to never take anyone else’s opinions of you too seriously.
Nina is truly one of a kind. She speaks her mind, is ruthless with her optimism, and gets exactly what she wants because she will work tirelessly until she is successful in her goals. There are few people on Earth so sure of who they are and what they want from life.
Nina has believed in me more so than anyone on the planet. From creating the Justin Bieber video in order to meet him, University choices, New York, The Bachelor and everything in between, I’ve always looked to Nina for that smirk and all-knowing nod and her words of affirmation: “Go for it Deed”.
When we were younger, we used to have sleepovers (even though our rooms were literally across the hallway) and we’d watch Braceface, eat junk food and talk about anything and everything on our minds. We still do the same thing, but now we’ve swapped out the adolescent show for the most fanatic show know to mankind: FRIENDS (we’ve watched the entire series probably 10 times over, and it NEVER gets old).
I feel incredibly grateful and lucky to have a sister/best friend as solid and supportive as Nina. Life would not be the same, hell I would not be the same (at ALL) without her.
Introducing the one and only, Nina:
How would you describe our relationship in three words?
Together we’re trouble.
Where is your favorite place on Earth?
Hands down, Gordon Bay
What is the one thing that always makes you smile?
Thinking about the dog and his goofy antics. Just picture his jowls (and ears) flapping in slow motion as he hurdles himself uncoordinatedly down a trail towards a treat you’re holding.
What’s your go-to work out song?
Four five seconds from rilin’
How do you make the world a better place?
Well, besides having saved the odd life here and there…I try to add humor to situations whenever possible – laughter is the best medicine, and if I can make someone crack a smile or laugh when they’re feeling down – it makes me feel good.
I’ve also, having worked at a community recreation centre for ten+ years, become extremely close to many seniors who frequent the pool as part of their socialization for the day. Some have no family, and on a number of occasions, I’ve had to send a few out on stretchers. I always make a point of visiting them while in hospital. It’s not much, but they’re family – and remind me so much of the grandparents I’ve lost – so really, seeing them light up makes it a better world for me.
What is your favorite place to escape?
Mom and Dad’s. Man, I don’t know what I’m going to do when that house is gone…
But really, wherever I am, if I can get mom on the phone, I feel safe. Things will be okay. Everything will be fine, we can fix that… 😉
What’s one thing in your life that make you feel strong?
Knowing I have the craziest team of Gavins standing behind me no matter what.
If you had one day left to live, what would you do first?
First? Catch the next ferry to the Island
Who is the one person on Earth that knows you the best?
Deed (me!) 🙂
What is your favorite physical attribute about yourself?
My Hair, when its brushed and in a good mood.
What is your favorite non-physical attribute about yourself?
My clumsiness – it makes people laugh, and for that I’m thankful (that however; might be the concussion, from walking into a wall, talking) …
Who inspires you?
Grandpa D. His ability to fix absolutely anything, his devotion to family, his smarts, and his stamina. I don’t know if he understands how much we all appreciate him and his rhubarb + applesauce.
What’s something you’ve never done, but always wanted to?
Travel to Holland and meet the Dutch side of the family.
What was the last thing that made you cry?
Reading a post my good friend made about putting her horse to rest. Really makes you sit back and realize the impact animals have in your life. They’re family, family that never judges, is always happy to see you, and loves you unconditionally. After reading her post, I vowed to hug Roo just a little bit longer, and a lot more often.
“There is no pain so great as the memory of joy in present grief.” – Aeschylus
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Thailand with Suzanne Ellis. I swear, in that month, I *almost* died about 6 times. Still, best trip ever.
What’s your favorite joke?
Q: What’s a pirate’s favourite letter?
A: You’d think it’s an a’RRRRR, But it’s the C!
What gives your life meaning?
Three little boys, Oscar, Jonah and Dori (Theo) and watching them grow and develop into such amazing kids. I don’t see them often anymore, but every time I do, I’m more amazed then the last.
Watching these kids grow up from lil wee ones, to the kind, creative and athletic boys they are today has both inspired me, and given me faith in their generation, also has me excited to one day have my own little team.
What inspires you to be better?
Daniel, mostly because he’s got traits that balance the ones I lack – he puts up with my crazy antics, and is patient, loving and caring in the best of times and the worst of times.
There are two types of people in the world… what are those two types?
As you get older, what are you becoming more afraid of?
How f***ing quickly time goes by.
What do you take for granted?
Friends and family – I have the best of both, and I don’t appreciate them as much as I know I should.
What makes a good life?
Being content in the present, okay with what you have and filling your life with happiness, not things.
What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
- Don’t worry so much.
- Go! Spend more time with your Grandma(s) and, please, cherish each and every moment of that time.
- Don’t date the guy in the Chicken suit.
What are the top three things you want to accomplish before you die?
- See the world (my bucket list worth of it)
- Speak another language fluently (I’ve got French, but only after a bottle of wine)
- Help a certain someone we all love dearly, get better.
What is your favourite quote?
“R is the most menacing of sounds, that’s why it’s called MURDER and not MUKDUK“– Dwight K. Schrute.
…Kidding. It just went well with my fav joke question.
But something to keep in mind:
“No Act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. – Aesop
